Periodontitis is a form of bacterial damage to the "periodontium, which is the whole supporting structures of teeth: bone, mucous membrane, periodontal ligament, which affects adults, and which if left untreated, become chronic and then irreversible leading to the destruction of the alveolar bone supporting the teeth.

In the past it was known as pyorrhea, a term that indicates the presence of pus in the mucous membranes around the teeth. Periodontitis is revealed by a change in the texture of the gum and its organizational structure with a spontaneous or induced bleeding of the same, more or less marked tooth mobility and the formation of periodontal pockets. This sign is generally what brings patients to be examined, but, unfortunately, represents a very advanced stage of disease and therefore more difficult to treat.
Periodontal pockets are a characteristic symptom of the disease; gums are normally stick to the tooth but when there is 'a chronic inflammation of swell and "extend" so not to adhere anymore to the tooth thus forming the so-called periodontal pockets in which are threaded bacteria, saliva, food particles that prime a vicious circle of the periodontal disease.
A thorough oral hygiene, frequent dental hygienist sessions, the regular visits by the specialist and the elimination of smoking help prevent periodontitis, but it is good to know that the new frontiers of periodontal therapy allow the healing of periodontitis, with the disappearance of the pockets and the reconstruction of the epithelium junction , including periodontal regeneration.
