In the meeting point between crown and root of the tooth is the gingival sulcus; which in normal conditions is deep 2 to 3 mm and ends with a junction composed of epithelial tissue.

When the plaque deposited in the gingival sulcus is not removed, it causes infection and destruction of this junction which moves lower to preserve itself, increasing the depth of the sulcus.
This one becomes deeper producing a pathological formation named periodontal pockets gum.
The plaque that is rooted in the pocket is enriched by germs that survive in the absence of oxygen and cause damage to support structures of the root of the tooth (periodontium).
If the depth of the pocket is below 4 - 5 mm, it is possible to make a conservative treatment of courettage or root planing.
The term "courettage" refers to the removal of damaged tissue of the periodontal pocket in the side "gum" using special instruments.
