Caries is a degenerative disease of hard tissues of the tooth.

Deterioration starts with the enamel to reach the dentine, which are slowly eroded until it reaches the pulp of the tooth. The main cause of this deterioration is the plaque. In fact the most frequent locations of deterioration are the initial chewing surfaces of posterior teeth and lateral surfaces of adjacent teeth. In all these areas, the plaque is easily trapped. The risk of caries can be greatly reduced by decreasing the amount and the frequency of consumption of sugar and following a good oral hygiene at home, and undergoing two sessions a year to the dental hygienist. Caries in the early levels, when only the enamel is affected, is the easiest one to treat and usually doesn't bring pain; when it reaches a more 'advanced level damaging the dentine, we are facing a medium - deep caries and pain is felt with warm/cold and swett. The treatment includes the removal of carious tissue with a drill and fill the cavity with ad hoc material, clearly biocompatible, having the same color of the tooth. When the pain becomes unbearable, with peaks at night, we are talking about a very deep caries. At this level, the drilling treatment alone is not enough; the tooth in question should be devitalized so to remove the nerve now in necrosis.
